This reveals to me that the process launched from the windows service has STDOUT and STDERR set to a terminal/console somewhere, and not the inherited file. So now at least I know where the output is going -- to some null terminal or something...
Because launching perl wrappers allows me to get around this, I'll stick to the workaround approach. Whatever's really going on here is a bit beyond me, I'm afraid...
