Hi Everyone, We have also encountered a recent silverfish problem, and our pest control contractors have recommended using Deltamethrin as a localized crevice treatment. Has anyone heard of this substance and have any thoughts? The pest control specialist has let us know that it is a very localized liquid that is used in crevices around a perimeter, and that it will not aerosolize to the rest of the room and that it is odorless. He has also recommended using this quarterly.
I’m in the process of asking for spec sheets on this and a potential dust-based treatment, which he noted would be more likely to get into the air. Happy to hear any thoughts on this form of treatment! Just because it doesn't say it is toxic, doesn't mean there aren't safety issues to consider. You don't want to be breathing it in. It sounds like you have a great start! A deep clean is the first step. Have you been able to control the RH? This is key for managing a silverfish population. They like humidity (hence the reason why you often find them in bathrooms, under sinks and in basements). As for pesticides: do not use a fogger of any type. We have had good luck with using a crevice treatment. This is usually something like borax or diatomaceous earth powders squirted into crevices and around water pipes. What this does is damage the exoskeleton of any bug that crosses the line of powder. This is a contained way to knock down the population, that does not affect the collections in the area. You will have to keep up on the cleaning and should try to identify any access points in the room – this can help you focus the crevice treatment on the areas most at risk. The combination of reducing the RH, housekeeping, blocking access points and the crevice treatment is the least toxic way to go. Good luck. We had a humidity problem a month ago where the room was above 60% relative humidity for a week and the silverfish appeared afterward. We are in the process of deep cleaning the space to remove all of the pests and potential food sources. My director wants to know if there are any chemical(s) that can be used inside the collection space to combat the pests that will not harm the collection (musical instruments). My research so far has not found anything, and the pest control specialist that services the outside of the building only has a fogger available that would leave behind a residue that I refuse to consider.
