I have zlib, zlib-devel installed in my system.
There seems to be some problem with ".o" files.
I tried to install after "make clean" and "make distclean" as well.
I believe, there must be some options to be used with make.

We have been using community version tars (source installers) for all our
production setups.

I think you should also need 'zlib-devel', check with the rpm's list of zlib
in your OS.
