A few things:
1. Running /etc/init.d/postgresql start as root?
2. su - postgres; less initlog (see whats in there, paste if u see
errors)
If you can find errors, paste the log on a pastebin site and send to me
to look further, or somebody else.

I had installed suse 10.1 with postgres, but when i try to enable server from
yast i get message like this :
/etc/init.d/postgresql start returned 1 (unspecified error):
Initializing the PostgreSQL database at location /var/lib/pgsql/dataYou can
find a log of the initialisation in ~postgres
