I very much doubt this functionality will be added to the core of PHP. A PECL extension is much more likely. There is a PEAR module for ID3 tags called MP3_Id that you might want to look at. FWIW, I've written an extension for ID3 tags (not the PEAR module, this is in C++) but I haven't released it yet.
