After further research today, I turned up bug report #9506 which solved the
"enable-gd-imgstrttf" problem - so there was a bug in there after all.

Compiled from sources - apache_1.3.19.tar.gz.
Since reporting the "bug" I have recompiled apache with the layout=RedHat
option and done a reinstall of PHP after doing a make clean. I no longer get
the syntax error message when starting Apache but apache now dumps without
writing any messages
