Jon, Many thanks - the actual problem is now solved.
As to how it occurred I think must be attributable to me at some stage in terms of fiddling around with the php.ini file. Perhaps I've had too many nights like last night and the brain cells are depleting past a critical point! Thanks to everybody else who responded to this query.
