Bugbear also takes advantage of a well documented bug in Internet Explorer,(a patch was released for this long ago) where it will execute an attachment in an html mail message. The virus infects an unpatched computer when the message is read.
Be sure you have this patch: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp or just point your internet explorer at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com - and your computer should grab the update. But I bet this site is a little busy now. Only affects windows computers. Bugbear also disables most of the popular anti-virus programs. If you think you might have bugbear Sophos has released a free program that will confirm whether or nor your system has bugbear This link will download a package with the program: http://www.sophos.com/tools/bearsfx.exe More info here: http://www.sophos.com/support/bugbear.html Gord On Sat, 5 Oct 2002, George L Smyth wrote: > Don't open attachments without knowledge that someone sent one (send them an > email asking if they did send one before opening it).
