I'm using wmaker for instance and it works like a charm. Also try to
remove any dotfile/dotdir concerning thuban or wx.

Basically you need to keep around the old shared lib because
existent DBs refers to it. Unfortunately, this was not managed
in etch release. My suggestion is extracting the shlib in the old
package and move it in the right place, with no symlinks, which
is roughly what the new package does.

The only reasonable solution is implementing an OCI plugin as done
for ECW. This is the same approach used recently for MrSID and
potentially any other proprietary format.

would presume that it is a nice swig-related issue due to the new
glibc.
Did you try to rebuild swig stuff from scratch? What arch are you using?

1.8 is not immediate, because
the current package needs a deep analysis and rewriting, already done
for HDF4. Consider that we - as DebianGis - get the maintainership
of HDF5 library quite late and it is not a package for a faint of heart.
So, please stay tuned...
