This affects me as well. I have reported a similar bug against cdo,
which also depends on a specific variant of hdf5 (libhdf7-openmpi-7).
The fact that they depend on mutually exclusive versions of HDF5 means
that libgdal1-dev and cdo cannot be installed on the same system using
the debian pack
