I cannot play any .m4a files, although cmus adds them to the library
when scanning directories. When playing those files, only noise comes
out of the speakers, as though the file were being tried to

When playing back .m4a files (downloaded from iTunes some time ago), I
see a funny effect with playback/total time information.
mplayer opens an X window displaying the album artwork
I suspect that this has something to do with the embedded album artwork,
as the MJPEG stream used for it obviously has no timing information.
Yet this doesn't explain the mix-up between OSD and console.
Here is information about the clip in question:

The file has embedded album artwork as MJPEG stream - I can imagine this
is at least part of the issue. It could be related to #728204 as well.
