Hi,
as I predicted, simply rebuilding mplayer allows me to play ogg vorbis
again.
$ mplayer -ao null /usr/share/games/freeciv/stdsounds/Splash.ogg
MPlayer 1.0rc4-4.6.1 (C) 2000-2010 MPlayer Team
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory

This confirms my suspicion that this is actualy a toolchain issue.
