Have revisited darktable since last upgrades and it seems the issue is gone.
Anyway, for the record, having several USB devices plugged in (as I often
have) has no noticeable effect in my case. Whenever the issue happened a
reboot should do the trick to have darktable working again. And it seeme

Another user reported freezes due to interaction with gphoto and a
charging USB phone. If you have a phone charging in your computer, can
you verify that the freezes still happen without any phones or
non-essential USB devices attached.
