New install of Stretch with Gnome..
# cd /run/user/1000
# ls-l
...you'll see something like this:
d? ? ? ? ? ? gvfs
Based on Piviul's suggestion, I ran
# chmod u+rx /run/user/1000/gvfs
also tried:
# chown myself:myself gvfs
I end up with:
chmod: cannot access '/run/user/1000/gvfs': Permis

I'm running Debian Jessie with Gnome 3.14 (so not MATE).
For me this is also a recurring issue, it makes the system quite
unstable in an undebian way.
