The CAT at PSU seems really rad. The folks there have been a big part of
the Puppet community and I know some people who have moved on from there to
roles at really good shops.

I'm one of the organizers of DevOpsDays PDX so yay for you getting
something out of it worth mentioning :)
The OP was talking about training or the lack of it, and I do think that's
a challenge. I was talking about my own transition into this kind of role
and honestly it involved a lot of work on
If you are looking for an Ops Engineer type role (you said it was one of
your options), in a lot of shops you'd be using Chef or Puppet in that type
of role. I'm partial to Puppet (I'm going to work there in a few weeks in
exactly this kind of role), but I know a ton of really smart people who use
Hi PLUG members,
I'm a longtime list member and one of the organizers of the DevOpsDays
Portland conference. It's happening August 9 and 10 at the Oregon
Convention Center.
We have some really fun talks lined up, plus Ignites and some Open Spaces.
The opening keynote is by Kelsey Hightower from
One of the things that helped me a lot when learning git was figuring out
how to fix my mistakes. Like how to rest --hard to a point before I screwed
everything up, or reset to origin/master.
Not something I have to do much now but it gave me a lot of confidence to

I had a need for a small VM at my last job, for SSH forwarding. I bounced
around between a few different distros, but I really liked both Mint and
Crunchbang. I think it's likely I'd go with one of them if I were to build
a Linux desktop/laptop.
And this is coming from someone with a lot more
I used Mint some and liked it a lot. Not as a real desktop though, just for
a lightweight VM.
For the OP, it could be helpful for people to hear some more specifics
about what you want to do with the box. Is this for a home desktop system,
are you a developer, what is the scenario you're using it

If the industry is highly regulated, you may not have a ton of choice
in the matter. You may have audit requirements that need to be met
whether you like it or not for things like PCI or HIPAA.

Or is this better done by the tail -f command?

Tom,
I'm a little confused. I'm not a routing guru by any means though :)
But there's a NIC in the gateway router? Why aren't the downstream routers
using that as their default gateway? And then it would handle the routing
to Verizon?
