Phrasing is intentionally vague as some answers I've
received on various Linux fora have confused me. My
questions may have implied I knew more than I actually do.
IOW the eventual response to some
A live instance as far as I have always used them is simply one that will
usually do some modprobing enough to start an X session and let you Kick the
tires before installing graphically. I wouldn't consider it a Virtual Machine
or an emulation.

Generally, a live distribution means that the entire system is on a
bootable optical disk (CD or DVD). Someone can insert the disk in the
