Did you check that you can start any gui application? Try xlogo for example.
What do you see when you run: ldd /usr/bin/skypeforlinux - It should be
statically linked.

I ran an update this morning. Help > About says I'm on Skype version
8.55.0.141. I'm running Xubuntu 18.04.
Is it open source and more featureful than Skype? There are apparently servers
for WIRE in Switzerland, but it is encrypted in and from those servers?
