I have slowly evolved versions of Stephen Frede's "text2ps"
since 1989 (!) to format text files for my HP postscript
level 2 printers (and their predecessors, back to the Apple
Laserwriter).

However, these days I write and print some text documents
with non-ASCII characters (mostly super/sub-scripts and
greek, sometimes other oddball stuff), and the exotic
UTF-8 characters print as "??". It is time-consuming to
manually process the documents through libreoffice and
similar GUI tools.

Libreoffice with unoconv might be an option, but I worry
about the long term stability of libreoffice. I prefer
a small and self-contained single-purpose tool suitable
for embedding in shell script pipes.

Can someone suggest a /stable/ replacement for text2ps
which can accomodate a larger subset of UTF-8, and create
usable postscript 2 output?

Keith

P.S. - if someone has current contact information for
Australian comp-sec expert Stephen Frede, I would like
to surprise him with an extremely belated "thank you".

P.P.S. - I'll upgrade to postscript 3 printers when I
find one built like a tank, using ultra-high-capacity
(cheap/page) toner cartridges like my venerable HP4050 .
