Matt, Thanks for the ideas.
Brian, That link made progress. the software is installed now and I can
load it. But it tells me my device is not connected or powered which is
scary since it is plugged into the PCIe slot. Do you have some time to
possibly meet me where this machine is located a
Rusty,
I am not sure I understand your plan. I only have one system.
I think perhaps the best way to install 18.04 is a complete system erase
and install. However, I can't get the drive backed up by tomorrow. I also
have to think about stuff like dumping all my mysql and postgresql
databases, fin
That would be quite useful for some of us Blind Linux users. :)

How about turning your current system into a VirtualBox instance inside your
new system, but share the appropriate directories between the VirtualBox
instance and the host? (Hopefully that’s enough words to get you thinking
along the lines I have in mind. If not, ask and I’ll say more…)

Some great ideas.
One issue for "repaving my hard drives" relates to insync. I have 6 or 7
email accounts that I use insync to update my folders for these accounts to
their respective google drives. If I "re-pave"my system, I will have to buy
insync plus @ $30/account to set up the same system I h

well you still have to do 16.04 first but it should work much the same way.

Mark,
I also dislike nuke and paving my system everytime ubuntu notches up a
version number. That said 14 is reaching end of support if it hasnt
already. You will soon find no more security updates is a bad thing. You've
got time, go through and migrate things to your /home and then once you

You might consider either repartitioning your current drive to allow for an
install in a new partition or installing on a different drive entirely, then
you have the ability to compare the two systems to see if

I had been looking at the error and not the version of the driver. This
message made me look at the version of the drivers you were trying to
install and realized that they are very very old (released February 16th
2015).

I have set myself a small challenge/puzzle.
So far it is going well Aside from the alienware effects and whatnot
everything is working really well.
Except the intel GPU. the nvidia gpu is up and running nicely, but the

I've attached the make.log specified.

Todd,
Thanks for the information about the InstallFest. I forgot to mention that
the system is set up with 2 mirrored 1 TB SSDs.
I am not excited about a clean install because I will then have to install
and configure all my applications again, and I know not all the important
stuff is in /home.
Tonight I got hold of some audiobooks. The problem was that each entire
audiobook is in the m4b format. Seeing as how I won't listen to the
whole book for several hours straight, I wanted them in smaller chunks,
say one file for each chapter. I found a script that does this
nicely. The ins
