I just bought two HP DL 380 G5's for a project. Server cost was under
$500 for 32GB RAM, two quad core XEON CPU's, and four 73GB SAS drives
with hardware RAID in a 2U package. That's 8 real cores of processing
for $300 and they were quiet, too - it didn't sound like a turbine
engine like most
Well, you can also use it as a Blender 3D render farm ;)

cool. look what I found at http://www.scribd.com/doc/211808/Computer-Cluster
here is an excerpt:
The Rocks operating system is made especially for clusters. Rocks is a
RedHat based operating system. Rocks has a lot of interesting features
which make your life easy. It is very easy to be installe
Man, I hate this I want so much to build one but I don't have any use
for one. It will just sit collecting dust. So I will just have an expensive
dust-bunny maker!

Mike, when the CPU's are running at 100%, 24/7, it eats some seirous
power. The guys in my facility use about 50amps to 60amps of continuous
power each, utilizing about a half cabinet worth of space each. Then
there is the cooling and the power requirements for that. It is a
serious business.
well if you Google beowulf cluster you will find the first one i had
learned about. but there are a number of options out there.
the main thing is once you have it set up you need to figure out what you
will do with it. and that is where it gets interesting because you then
usually have to build a
I've always wanted to tether computers together for the experience and this
is just giving me an excuse to do it! If I find my electric bill too high I
can always stop doing it.
But the question remains. what good are
butcoins/feathercoins/anyoftheothercoins? Where can they be used?

You will be if you try to mine a cryptocurrency. I think you're
underestimating how much processing power is needed to get coins.

I'll tell you Rusty, I currently have 2 computers that I keep on 24 hours a
day. I set it up so I pay a yearly average per month and right now my
electric bill is $78/month. I'm not too worried about my electric bill.

thanks for the advise I wish I could afford it, Gilbert. now if just
tethering a bunch of computers together would work I could do that! Where
could I spend this 'currency' at anyways?

I spoke to a friend of mine some time back who has done some mining, and
what I remember about what he said was:
Originally, the problems were pretty easy, but they get harder as each
problem is solved. Now the problems are very hard, so that at this
point, you almost have to buy an asic-based
I have several customers mining in my collocation facility. They are
using the custom ASICs. Every few months they seem to replace them with
newer stuff. I can tell you the they use a lot of electricity and
generate a lot of heat. You have to spend a lot of money to make money
is all I can say.
never mind I just looked at their 'market place'. I think that it
probably is going nowhere. I mean if you can't buy food what good is it?

I think feather coin is a good thing to mine because there is a market
already set up for it. What do you think?

holy moly! they want between 400 and 1 dollars for ASIC stuff. I
figured I'd try tethering a bunch of used computers together because that
is what I can afford to do.

You will spend more money on electricity than any bitcoins you are able to
mine with anything other than custom ASICs. If you want to fiddle around
with a crypto-currency, I'd pick another one where mining on your personal
laptop (or freely available PCs).

I have a list of all of the types of coin that are out there and the complexity
to mine. I'll try to remember to post it in here so that you can research the
different types of coin.

Look into ASIC based bitcoin mining it's way way way faster than using
standard computers to do the mining.
That being said, I would wait a little while and see how bitcoin plays
out. It's on rocky ground right now and you might find that you have
purchased a bunch of hardware and burned a to
what I'm thinking of doing is buying a bunch of used computers and turning
them into a super-computer and using that for the bit-coin mining. What is
super-computerizing called?
