I want to move all my non-windows dev to an ubuntu (or suggestion)
virtual box vm. I'm noticing a sluggish UI both on ubuntu and Mint with
cinnamon when running on my macbook. It's a retina with ssd and plenty of
ram. I thought it might be unity until I tried Mint. Anyone know trick to
speed
Add memory - also, get some read/write statistics on the SD card. I have
noticed great lags in SD - not sure if this is due to driver(s) youth or ?

I have had some good luck enabling 3d performance as well and boosting
graphics ram.

What I have done, both in real installations and virtual machines is I make my
/tmp and /var/tmp folders tmpfs. I have found, at least with KDE, the need to
create and read/write hundreds of small files will slow down a system with
poor iops.

I'd second that - get something like gkrellm under mac that can show you
composite graph stats of cpu, memory, disk and see what is pegging when
you run. Something will generally hit a limit if it's lagging. Lack of
memory will cause it to dip to swap, and then just spills into your disk
