If you ignore things like mindshare and stuff like that, Xen requires
hardware integration on both the host and the client. VMWare does not
require that.

Actually, Xen and VMWare can both do full virtualization (hypervisor
unaware guests). Xen also does paravirtualization (hypervisor aware
