For the record, I'm with Dale here. Generally speaking, running a chown /
chmod against an entire system is bad. There are system files that have
setuid / setgid set, and for good reason (/bin/su comes to mind). There
could be uses for specific directories however, and with that in mind:

4. Replacement computer options/ideas? (j...@actionline.com)
It all depends on what you NEED the box to do.
If all you want to do is ssh into a NAS get a netbook or even the Asus
desktop that mounts behind a monitor and a NAS. IF you want the biggest
baddest multimedia streaming center
I wonder what the problem in then?

Thanks Dale, Kaia, and Eric ...

I fully realize that entirely too often, I have no idea what I am doing;
but I just blindly muddle along anyway and somehow, by the grace of God
and the guidance of so many excellent plug friends, I manage

I would do this first to avoid any surprises with links, if there are
any:
find [dir] -type l | more
Then:
find [dir] -exec chown user:group {} \;
[dir] being your top dir

I have run into no such thing.
I would try uninstalling both chrome and FF and look for any traces to
clean them out and try again. Something is very wrong.

when I load google chrome on my xp laptop pages take forever to load
well, at least it doesn't cause scripts in gmail to stop running (like
firefox did). I can't be a special case! if chrome and firefox want to

Thanks again to everyone who responded to this question.
In particular, thanks to Joseph Sinclair for such an excellent explanation
of the new options that are now available for low-power, low-heat. Sounds
like *exactly* what I was hoping to find.
Outstanding information. Many thanks!

For anyone that noticed, I wanted to apologize for the list having an

I've been replacing desktop computers for a lot of people with Atom-based
nettops running Linux lately.
The dual-core Atom chips (original 330, or the new D510) are absolutely

They're VERY low power as well, so the system generates less heat overall and
