I have a problem, I can't download ubuntu with my live cd. I live in
cottonwood. Does anyone live around here who can copy it for me and
I'll drive over to you to get it? Doesn't one of you live on Mingus
Mountain?

I briefly took this discussion with Michael offlist. Anyway, the system
seemed to behave itself better with kde minimal, but still locked up
once. I tried xfce again and fought with it to configure the menu like
I wanted.

While I hate having to whitelist sites with no/notscript, newegg is one
that I'll simply deal with their excessive scripting tendencies. When
it comes to pc sales, most only get worse from there (buy.com comes to
mind for horrid scripting woes despite sometimes good deals).

I first heard of newegg via PLUG many years ago. I've been mostly happy
with company, but I'm tired of not being able to navigate the site without
enabling javascript.
Any suggestions for companies that actually want me to be able to see
their products and purchase them?

Have you seen any errors in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/ Xorg.0.log
that could give you a hint at what could be the problem?

I'm only seeing the usb disk being probed - no other ata devices.
Either it came unplugged or yes, died finally.
You can check the bios and see if it sees the disk, maybe make sure that
the right devices are enabled in there. Probably plan on a new disk
however.

here is what dmesg says. I think this means the drive is bad. I don't
think the live cd I have has grub but rather its predecessor, lilo.
Where should I go to download a current version of ubuntuu that will
run on a cd? I don't have a dvd burner. heck, i don't even know if
this cdrom is a dvd playe
You need to read this:
http://linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2005/11/how-to-repair-corrupt-mbr-and-boot.html
You need to read down to the newer instructions for the last bit to
reapply grub. Get a bootable cd, just about any should allow you to do
this usb, cd, or floppy.
How did you lose your boot
I don't even know what a glasshouse drive is so I suppose not. This is
an old computer donated to me graciously from a plug member.

What error are you getting?
Why do you think "boot sector craped out"?
*IF*, you had a boot sector problem, you can boot with anything that boots,
mount your drive and chroot into it, re-install grub, and you should be
done.
*IF* the problem is the boot sector, which I doubt...

uubuntuu 10. I do have the cd for mepis 6.5. How do I reinstall the
boot sector? How do I figure out if it is the boot sector and not a
hard drive failure. If it is a haard drive failure could someone mail
me a uubuntuu cd? I hav
