Michael,
You did in deed stumble upon the problem. The ethernet cable from the laptop
"MUST" get plugged into a local port on the router. The internet "WAN" port is
wired different and will not work that way. You then have to have the laptop
share the internet connection by setting the default

I am surprised how many responses there were with little mention of Toshiba and

What brand is the laptop? I have had success in the past fixing both

No, that won't work, the CDROM drivers are on the boot disk. Win98 was not
designed to be bootable from the cd, although I do have a few that were made
bootable. You can down load the disk contents online, just google it. Also
windows will 'NOT' format over ext2 or ext3. You must use either a ut

I am looking for an alternative for Zope/Plone for my web site and stuff. I
have really gotten used to it, and I am desperate for a host, however without
the expensive price tag. I have tried some of the php CMS in the past, but this

Additionally, if the router is setup so that only specific mac addresses can
get connected, and they are static (turn DHCP off), no ssid is broadcast the
connection is even more secure. I highly doubt there would be an issue. By the
time the encryption was broken, the ttl would be long dead.

Alan,
In theory, 253.. I all practicality I would say no more than roughly 16-20
otherwise you risk overloading available bandwidth. This is just a guess
though. I have seen some "small" routers handle up to 100 with no problem.
Hope this helps,

I have used GoDaddy in the past but changed to 1and1 two years ago. I have had
NO ISSUES with them. I can honestly say however, I do not like the interface
they provide for the control panel. Otherwise, once setup and you change the
dns settings ( I reccommend Zoneedit, HIGHLY!!) you do

In the Router settings there should be a place for you to make specific mac
addresses static, ie.. the router will not hand those addresses to any other
device unless it has the correct mac address or network card. That is the only
way to prevent the router from handing out that address, even if
AH, I see.. That is the problem sometime when dealing with small registrars. I
have used GoDaddy in the past, but I like 1and1 better. I still do not use them
for DNS though as I hate the 1and1 interface. I am using zoneedit and aside
from the occasional ip change I have not had any issues in 8+

Joey,
The solution you need is very simple. The only ports blocked by Cox for home
use is 443 and 80. 20-22 are wide open. Go to your dns providers account
management page. Add an address there like ftp.myserver.com
you have to do this because it will not allow you to add an ftp:// address.
