To mount the drive automatically, it's expecting to see a FAT32 partition.
Lowest common denominator and all that.
The Apple machine may also mount the drive automatically if it's formatted with
HFS or HFS+, but I haven't tried that.
It's probably entirely possible to mount an NTFS formatted
I'm going to take a guess that the CD drive and the dead HD are connected to
the same built-in controller on the motherboard. The controller is lighting
the LED to let you know that disk access is occurring. It's not picky about
which device is being accessed.
