If you don't have Linux you do have an alternate option. VMware server
is free, and then you can run several Linux installs on your system...
r you can virtualize your windows machine and then run it inside
Linux :-)

Smoothwall is a pretty decent firewall, but not really my style. Pfsense
seems to have better options and is built on freebsd. I hear it's easy to
add to pfsense
