When you slam in recordable media k3b should automagically ask you what you
would like to do?
Verify it via command line dvdrecord and cdrecord:

This might be related not to the drive but how the drive is connected.
If it is sata it should be ok. But if its IDE then it might be useing
something like a j-micron controller.
