Sometimes, you can simply wipe the drive then setup as normal. dd if=/dev/zero of=usb drive bs=512k It will wipe with zeroes until completed. Then your drive should be clean. That will rule out whether there is a chip making it read-only or the partitioning scheme. I do this drive wipe every

Mike, Copying your files to your home directory MAY perpetuate the problem to other USB drives that you plug into that box, it depends on the nature of the problem. If the problem is a virus there is good chance that it will. If you want to do root cause analysis don't reformat your USB drive.

Mike, Don't know if you have solved the problem yet but there are a few of ways to view what is ACTUALLY on the drive. These all take advantage of the fact that in UNIX all devices are treated like files and all files 'can' in most circumstances... be treated like devices. mount the drive and
