I want to make a voice recording using a garden variety recording device. Then
I want to put that recording on a web page. I've seen the Quicktime controls
and that would work.

You didn't specify what format you uploaded it to; it may be 'web
compatible' already.
Download Audacity if you want to do any editing with the audio file.
CDEX if you want to convert it to a MP3 file (works great for CDs too).
