7.3.x buttons are tied to favourite 1,2,..n yes .
Not so in 7.4 the 1-6 button has now preset's which are local to that

I tried the command and after complaining that YAML isn't installed

You will need to point the Browse configuration directory parameter in
the Custom Browse main settings page to a directory where you want your
Custom Browse menu configurations to be stored. It's set to the playlist
directory by default, but I suppose you might not have a playlist
directory
You want to look at the Manage header/footer items sub section in the
Custom Browse settings.
The important type is the first part of the name of the menus shown in
this list, for example the libraryartistheader of the menu called

At last - precipitation makes a comeback to my SB3s!
I'm guessing that many people will be grateful for restoring this
functionality having lost it from Martin Rehfeld's (excellent)

Thanks - I was way off base with my searches. The CPAN / YAML community
sites are not for the amateurs!
Anyway, it didn't work. I think this is telling me that OS X Bash
doesn't ship with make - is that even possible?
Code:

Here's the latest:
the assumption is that I can't build HTML::FormatText because I don't

I can't build YAML because I don't have 'make'. Im guessing that not
having 'make' is the real reason for not being able to build
FormatText.
In order to get the make command you have to register

I really jealous on the weather-forecast plugins, which render nicely on
squeezebox boom and alike
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67655).
Just I don't like the way they work on my Controller - information only
shows up in the extras menu - I'd rather like a real screensafer
yup, I was running all the above commands as root using the 'su' command
- I assume that's the same thing?
Code:

perl -MCPAN -e shell
install CPAN
reload CPAN
install YAML
install HTML::FormatText

Hey
*thanks for all your patience here; I now have a working system.*
Firstly running SU and then the commands apparently isn't the same as
running SUDO in front of all the commands - my bad - its been 20 years
since I programmed UNIX (as it was called back then).
So I now have an up to date
I would really appriciate some help (see above),
as i have no clue what is wrong.

sudo is different in that there is no real superuser account but you
use your normal account and increase privileges.
If you want to run several commands in a row the workaround is sudo
bash
