else could I do to troubleshoot this?
Before I discovered PlayReal I tried to use the AlienBBC plugin without
success. I disabled it, but could some remnant of it be interfering?

maybe five.
I've waited up to about one minute or two.
I checked with 'ps ax | grep mplayer' to see if mplayer had started but
it was never running.
I tested mplayer on the CLI as mentioned in my first post, and it
worked.

You were correct! realmplayer.sh lacked the execution flag. It's working
now.
Many thanks for your help!

Any ideas?

I find only Plugins-Bookmark-Plugin_v30.zip which seems to be for
slimserver 7.0 as stated in install.xml. Or can it be used for 6.5.4?

I found something that mitigates this problem. At least on the two linux
systems I use, Gentoo and Ubuntu 7.04. I simply changed the Audio mixer
in softsqueeze from my sound card to Java Sound Audio Engine. This made
the problem almost entirely go away.

I've tried with a fresh install of slimserver after removing .pref and
db files with the same result. I have no problem using a Squeezebox2.
