The plugin posted on Felix's website should work fine.
Perhaps some debugging would be in order.
Try running slimserver from the command line. This will give you any
errors that might stop this plugin from functioning normally.
There are several postings on how to do this depending on your OS.
I have the same problem as whdean. Certain plugins show in the SS
settings, but not in the player settings. I am having that problem now
with the auto dim dispaly feature.

The autodisplay settings are per player.
Look under the plugins section for your player and you should see the
settings.
Alternatively you should be able to access the settings using the
remote control --> plugins --> autodisplay.

I have done that - It shows up in my list of plugins in SS, on the
Plugins page.
But what from there? I don't appear to have any settings below the
list, like I do wth LazySearch and SuperDateTime. I don't see a way to
configure the plugin.
