Don't know how or what can have been the cause, but a full reboot solved
the issue.. Of course I have terminated all slim-processes and even all
perl-processes before, but apparently that is not enough after
upgrading Squeezecenter..
another lesson learned ;-)

After a long time of success, the last version of Squeezecenter broke my
IRBlaster plugin (5.6.2).
It SC now complains in the plugins page that it 'failed to load'. After
removing IRBlaster and resetting the plugins/state.prefs, removing all
the settings and reinstalling IRblaster it still fails
