Just a couple of guesses. First, maybe the default application for
.jnlp files is not right in Firefox. I've seen where it wants to open
with the java executable, and I think it should use javaws. Second, I
don't know about Kubuntu, but with Fedora the default java packages are
the "open" ones,

softsqueeze. usually the damn thing appears to load, but then crashes.
