A version of mplayer called mplayer-stdout is part of flipflip's SSODS.
I think it is based on 1.0pre8 but modified to get around the missing
/dev/fd devices.
I believe SSODS also has a copy of lame - I'm not sure of the version.

From mp3dev.org (doc/LICENSE.GPL, doc/LICENSE.LGPL):
lame 3.97b3 lame, libmp3lame
From mplayerhq.hu (doc/LICENSE.GPL):
mplayer 1.0pre8 mplayer

to bpa, your very simple and clear solution works. Perfect, problem
solved and very clear instructions even I could not misinterpret. Thank
you very much.
thanks again,

I think it's mostly Flipflip and Mr Hyde who has worked with getting 3rd
party plugins to work on the DS-106, and succeeded...

The instruction below assume Sirius plugin has been installed.
Sirius needs mplayer for WMA stream server-side decoding as there is no
wmadec utility on Linux systems. This server side WMA decoding support
is provided as a side benefit of AlienBBC installation but I think you
do not need to
