I'd say use the same version as upstream if possible.

I usually use the same one that they originally generated configure
from. It's often a comment in some of the files.
Annoyingly, I've ran into the situation a few times where version X.Y
works fine, but X.Y-1 and X.Y+1 are full of fail :(.
