I re-installed bind and both host and dig are now working, but attempts to
join a mail list fail:

What I did was to modify /etc/hosts here by adding the IP address and the
name @slicehost.net. I'll let them know there's a problem with their DNS
server.

That has been in main.cf. I commented out of
reject_unknown_client_hostname and reloaded postfix.
