I've got a non-functioning cell in one of my 5xx
batteries, and have seen a couple of posts that
mentioned clearing shorted cells. Can anyone give more
specifics on how this is done? Do you have to cut open
the battery to do it?
TIA,

I also cleared a shorted cell by applying short
What the previous poster was talking about was doing something dangerous
like connecting the battery very briefly to a car battery or charged
capacitor. It could fix it, but it could also cause the thing to blow up
which wouldn't be pleasant.
The safe route is to buy new cells and rebuild the

I have the manual as a pdf (2Mbyte). I can send it if you want, got it
myself last year from someone on this list.
Thanks to you both for your regular contributions to the list, many times
most useful to me!

Hi-
Just got a 3400c with 48 megs ram , the 200MHZ model. Came with 8.0!I own
both 8.6 and 9, which do you recommend? How hard is it to add RAM? How much
would it speed up? Which version MIE? or would Opera or Icab work faster?
Other low cost speedup ideas?
This is a beautiful computer!

Jim,
I've got a 3400/180 with the RAM maxed out at 144MB. If you're going to bother
opening it up you might as well put in as much as you can afford. It's not too hard
to swap the RAM either. I'm running OS 9.1 but I've heard some folks say 8.6 would
run faster on it. Don't know, never

There also was mention of a powersupply that would fit in the bay.
A good fix for after the REA is up this June. Does naybody recall

I might obtain one?
Thx,

I have the one from VST. It can be used in the expansion
Not initialize, what you want to do is go into the options that let you
re-partition the drive into a single Mac partition.
That does not work, even with 1 Partition selected, the 5mb Unallocated
Partition is still there. But, again trying to initialize it just fails.
I did manage to unlock

That was it.
Netscape 4.06 must use my e-mail address automatically.
My 3400 has 48 megs of ram on OS8.1 and IE5 is
practically unusable, especially if you are listening

amazing! Fast and only uses bout 3megs while running

I really want to add 128 megs and a 20 gig drive for

Hi all!
I have a 3400c and in looking at the apple service manual (and my
recollection of the first G3's) I think the first G3 motherboards might fit
into the 3400...I even recall it was an official apple upgrade path...
or do I?
My question:
Am I right?
I think only the 233Mhz board will
Russ - are you planning on access your neighbors
wireless setup from your home next door? Those
access points usually have a limited range (about
300') You can put a booster antenna on them to up the
signal strength but those are mainly handy for
boosting the signal to penetrate thick rock

I'm here at the 'Internet Cafe' at Walmart (!) so
don'thave my links handy so can't find it right now,
but there is a group in Australia that uses homebuilt
antennas (cost about $10) to connect from 7km! Our
local ISP uses 802.11b for high speed wireless access
and with a 24db gain antenna

How hard is it to replace the PRAM battery? In my old
180 it was REALLY a pain.
The local Mac shop wants $35 for the battery alone!! I
might just make one from a couple of watch batteries
if I need to!

Ah, now I remember! Looks like I wont be able to find a kanga board very
easily...
Which leads me to my second question:
The reason I was looking for a G3 board was because the AC connector on my
3400 has developed bad flex and intermittent disconnection...
Looking around on the
Cisco sells a consumer wireless base station with about twice the power of
most other base stations.

Take a good look at that connector. I've never looked
at a 3400 MB, but I know that for a couple models of
Toshiba's, they used to do that, and we repaired them
with a hot glue gun and a big blob of solder... the
bigger the blob, the better the job ;-)
