Thanks for the helpful pointers. I got it stripped down to where I can see the serial port attached to the motherboard, but now what? I could go ahead and try to remove the motherboard, but I am not sure I know what to do with it once I do. Can I solder in a serial port connector without damagin

I've isolated the serial port on the motherboard but I don't know how to fix it. I can't see any visible problem. What should look broken? I have a magnifying lens, but there is no clear fault. Should I spray with contact etching solution, reassemble and try again, or is there a better idea?
