I've managed to get the 'book, after 6 hours of work, to now boot off of the CF startup unit, but I can't get it to work properly from the hard drive. Doing a clean install from 8.1 fails, as does upgrading, or even just dragging the system folder from the CF to the HD and going from there.

Hello. I am the new owner of a (free) PB 520c. It came without any cords, etc, but after fetching an AC adapter I was surprised to find it powers up and into OS 7.6.1. Unfortunately it is devoid of an Applications folder, so no apps yet. My ambitions are modest - I don't need a new processor

I would strongly recommend you find a copy of RamDoubler for that machine, regardless of how much memory you end up putting in it--and if you can find one (and they do show up on ebay occasionally--2.5 SCSI notebook drives), a larger HD for the machine. Having used a 520c for several years
