Best OS for PB500?

I have my trusty old Powerbook 520 - bought used in 1995 ($1200!), since upgraded to 100mhz PPC, 40MB RAM, 540c screen, and 500MB hard drive. What is the best OS to use for this? I am currently using 7.6.1, but I could also use 8.0 or 8.1. Since it's a PowerPC, are there significant advantages to m
