Battery recharges while in PB165c?

Is my removable battery in my 165c supposed to charge while it's IN the powerbook? I see an image of a battery up in the right hand corner of the screen that is a solid color but I don't know what it means or how to charge this thing. When I unhook the AC adapter it goes dead. Thanks, kinda new t
