Well, I done the dirty deed. Dropped $15 at Radio Shack for a PCMCIA
adapter and $44 at Costco for a 128MB SmartMedia card, slipped the SM
in the adapter, the adapter in the 1400 and lo and behold I'm able to
run enough apps simultaneously to where I can actually USE my 1400.

Thanks for the input regarding both SmartMedia and CompactFlash
having similar finite memory write cycles. I still haven't heard from
anyone using SmartMedia in a PCMCIA carrier as Virtual Memory on a
1400. Anybody? Friends? Rumors? Speculation? Theories? Assumptions?
Hypotheses?

Many thanks for the input, especially to Ken Norris for his detailed
accounting of what went right and what went wrong. My procrastination
has paid off as Costco has a $10 discount on your choice of 128MB
SmartMedia or CompactFlash. I am left with a couple of questions,
however:

same issues?
Yes. SmartMedia also has a finite write-cycle lifetime.

Forgive me if this is a rehash but someone theorized that the 1400's
memory could be expanded using a PCMCIA adapter and a CompactFlash
or SmartMedia card. I happened upon such a card at Radio Shack for
only about $15 then noticed Costco had 128MBs for around $55.
Has anybody successfully (or
Hello
I have a 64Mb CompactFlash card in my PB1400 formated as a Mac-disk, I use
it as a RAM-disk for my Weather-station reading and data store.

I'd work, but the one gotcha is flash memory has a limited number of write
cycles. In a digital camera or the like, they'll last a good long while.
But, used as virtual memory where there could be thousands of writes in a
short time, it'll die very quickly.

True, but they're guaranteed for at
