Hi Listers
I am new to this list but not to LEM.
I am looking a obtaining a low cost laptop. A G3 looks to be out of
my range (price wise) but a 1400 or 3400 look interesting.
I would prefer to use a 3400 with its greater ram and screen size but
the CPU is not upgradable.

I love my 1400c upgraded with a Sonnet 333MHz G3. It is a solid performer. I use it 10+ hours a day for developing, surfing, AIM, and email.
The RAM is limited to 64MB. You can use a CF card for virtual Mem which is fast and
So would you say that Web page loading and screen redraw are good,
not tolerable, with the 333 G3?
I would. I've been *very* happy with mine, and it's all the PowerBook I

even with VM on (just about necessary with 9.1 on the
My 1400s tie into the network via their ethernet PCMCIA cards. They then
can share the cable modem just like any other Mac on my network.

Are cd-roms on the 3400 and 1400's interchangeable?
The modules are not interchangable, but the CD ROM mechanisms might
be. I have not taken apart a 3400 CD ROM

you could put one into a 1400 CD ROM shell.

Searched the archives but am still not clear on this:
What 802.11 cards will work in a 3400 and 1400? I was pretty much convinced
the Lucent WaveLAN Silver and Gold would do it, but then I saw somebody
recently say it was cardbus - which I don't believe is correct. Is it?
Stated another way
WavLAN Silver is not cardbus.
