On my 3400 I used:
i) a combination Global Village 56k modem and ethernet pcmcia card. It worked well, and provided both capabilities. Also, the installer contains all necessary drivers for the modem and ethernet functions.
ii) I used an Orinoco card for wireless and there are appropriate v7.2 Mac drivers. You can also use TomeViewer to extract the Airport extensions.
iii) I used a Macally 276 usb pcmcia card, with the shaved off left side, and the hacked usb extensions, as discussed here many times.
For the 'battery life remaining' have you got the battery control panel installed and the status selected to show time remaining?
