Sorry, but there it it. When the battery starts to die, the computer
starts acting wonky. How the battery is dying is that it won't hold a
charge. Or holds less less. It takes time for it to croak, making
it all that much

yes, it is, but it's a NiCd battery, and they die. Also the
replacement instructions for a PRAM battery in the 500 series is:
