Mary,

How much RAM? If it still has it's original 32MB I'd advise "no". Mac OS
8.6 will certainly run all right on a computer with only 32MB but that
doesn't leave room for too much else.

If on the other hand you have some more RAM, go for it. And, whatever
firmware update(s) it may need will surely be available at
apple.com--any normal retail copy of OS 8.5 or 8.5.1 can be freely
updated to 8.6 (althouth the 8.6 Update is about a 30MB download.)
