Possibly. I, constantly, put mine to sleep with Tetris and the
system/finder running and it wakes up without a problem.

I have the same problem. However I did notice if I put the 1400 to sleep
as opposed to it going in to sleep by itself (especially on battery power),
it will wake up without problem.
For the last 2 weeks it was fine, then today I got the checker-board when
waking from sleep.

You are "stepping on" the system heap when you restart, which causes the
system to crash. This is common with PowerBooks. They use a lot of
"real" memory when they wake up. Both my 3400c's and my 1400c do this.
This was, also, pretty common with older Macs that had smaller amounts

My PB 1400 works fine, but when I put it to sleep sometimes it will
not wake up, The screen comes up with the grey black/white dotted
image, but The HD doesn't spin, nor does it make any noise, The only
way to fix this is by a reset, is there a way to fix this...
