I revived a 5300 that suffered a similar fate (dog ran into the thin adapter
cable, bending the male input plug and breaking the female AC adapter's
plastic housing and loosening the solder connections on the motherboard).

Once I fixed the broken plastic housing and resoldered the three "legs"
that fit into the motherboard, the AC adapter still didn't work. Long story
short, I finally discovered that the braided wire "wrap" inside the outer
plastic wire, which becomes a wire that is soldered to the outer, negative
portion of the AC plug, had been broken right at the plug. Unfortunately,
after voltmeter testing confirmed my worst fears, I had to destroy the plug
to confirm my diagnosis.

I removed the bad portion of the wire and the now-destroyed plug, bought a
right-size adapter from Radio Shack, and brought the laptop back to life via
AC. Your situation probably parallels mine in at least one out of the three
problems I solved.
Good luck!
